As an Arizona wedding photographer, I spend a whole lot of my time on Instagram. I absolutely love scrolling through pages, searching hashtags, and my favorite of all, searching locations. Whenever I see a photo from a cool location, I take a screenshot and add it to my traveling list. A while back, I saw a photo taken at The Superstition Mountains in Arizona and I knew I had to find a couple to shoot there! A few weeks later, Nate and I planned a trip to Arizona (one of our favorite places to travel). I was able to connect with a couple who lived close-by and was stoked about getting a session done.
Katie and Alex were a dream to work with. They happily obliged as I asked them to hold hands and run at me, or nuzzle their faces super close. The results are some of my favorite images. Travel excites me, and shooting in a new place ignites my creativity. I love the movement, intimacy, fun and variety I was able to capture of these two. And I am totally obsessed with the wide shots that I got of the two of them mid-run, giggling! Having a 20mm lens in my bag definitely paid off!
As an Arizona wedding photographer, and having this experience with this location, I would like to offer advice to anyone interested in shooting at The Superstitions, or Lost Dutchman State Park. First, I would definitely recommend waiting until sunset to start shooting since there isn’t much shade. During our session, the best light came right at the end, about 15-20 minutes after the sun was down.
Another tip is to wear comfortable and durable shoes. There are lots of cacti and other jagged objects that are not fun to step on. (I speak from experience…my bootie had a battle with a cactus and the cactus won). Katie also made me aware of a variety of cactus that can literately jump onto you if you get to close. I looked it up, it’s no joke!
Last, I would recommend going down multiple streets near the park for different angles of The Superstitions. My favorite location from our shoot was a side street near the park with tons of saguaros. Go explore, you won’t regret it!

This is such a beautiful session! Love the ones where they are running. My favorites are the ones where they are surrounded by cacti. So gorgeous!
I love the Superstition mountains so much, we used to visit AZ all the time and it’s a great spot for engagement photos! These are so fun and they look like a great couple to have photographed!
Beautiful photos!!! Nice!

Wow what a beautiful Arizona engagement photo shoot. We love the mix of color and b/w pics, and the candid shots were amazing. Love the way you ended the session with those shots with the cactus.
Oh man those cacti make me wish I was an Arizona wedding photographer! You’re so talented – these photos are gorgeous. I just love their connection…and their wardrobe.
How fun! I loved her outfit. How long have you been photographing weddings in Arizona? We’ll have to meet up next time I’m in Arizona. I’m a planner out there. Would love to connect.
Laura, I would absolutely love to meet up! I am new to the Arizona wedding market, primarily shooting in Colorado right now. I visit AZ quite frequently and love the warmer temps and desert landscape much more than Colorado, so I am trying to market to AZ more than CO. Next time I am down there, I’d love to get together.
What a cute couple! I love how you took your experience as an Arizona wedding photographer and made this shoot magical for this couple. The Superstition Mountains in Arizona are stunning and you did a great job!
